IPEX Edible Architecture competition 2014 (My experience)

On 3rd May 2014 my friends and I joined a competition. It is a competition where we had to build a city out of FOOD! nothing but food (except for UHU glue, but my team mates and I decided to make our own glue made of food). The theme this year is "liveable cities, sustainable cities". It took us 1 month of discussion and research of how we should make a city out of food and etcetera. We decided that we were to build our city only 2 days before the event, that is 1st of May, Labours day and also a holiday! It was one of my team mates birthday that day so it was an exception for her not to come, but she was delegated to do all the signboards and mini figurines. So i personally think that was fair.
So on the day we were to build our city, my team mates went to my house and we built the city. Since it was our first time joining this kind of competition, we were not that ready for what was to come.
IT WAS TERRIBLE! It was so hard. I personally went through so much trouble with pretty much everything! Ok so here are some pictures of what happen on the 1st Day,

Our board still looking clean and fresh.

Water with corn flour, blue food colouring and water. (DON'T USE THIS METHOD)

Trying to make the city that we planned for 1 month to come alive.

Some kind of stadium

Some kind of hill my team mate made. She made it out of all those "sisa-sisa makanan" and green food colouring.

Okay so I didn't really take that much picture on the first day when my friends were around. This is because i was so busy, my hands were full of those starch and we didn't really do much so there was nothing really to take picture of. So after my friends went home, I continued doing it with the help of my mum. And this was the outcome..

I personally think it looks fine. But my brother and dad insisted that it doesn't look quite right. I was actually kind of piss off at their comments. So me being ego and all just left it like that.

Alas, on the 2nd day (Friday), when i came back home from school, I was welcomed home by a disastrous "masterpiece" (well not so master any longer)

I wasn't really crying okay. Just posing for the picture. hahah

This was suppose to be a waterfall!!

The purple bridge was haywire!!

And this is what happened if you use corn flour and water!!

Okay so my dad and my brother was probably right. hahaha. So I did what I had to do..

I took everything down.

One of my team mate that wasn't able to come on the 1st, decided that she will come over to my house on the 2nd and try to finish the project. The rest of my team mates didn't turn up because well it was a really last minute thing and yea you know how that works. right? anyway, moving on..

It was 8pm (Friday), when she finally arrived at my place and we literally had 17hours before the competition! We decided that we'll scrap everything off and make a whole new masterpiece.

I quickly did a simple sketch on the board, hoping that this time our city will come alive.

With the help of my mum and the strength that God gave us to stay up all night. We came up with this..

After all of this were done, it was already 5am (Saturday)!!! I was literally sleep walking!! We decided to take a nap for a few hours and continue again later on. Okay so I'm not so sure what time we woke up, what i know is, it was late. WE HAD LITERALLY 5 MORE HOURS!! We took turns showering and after that continued finishing the "masterpiece".

My other team mate came over and help out with the finishing touch.

After hours and hours of glueing, moulding. sticking, cutting, and answering calls from our other team mate, we were finally DONE! and it was 1:30pm! We had literally 30 minutes to go to the Sabah Trade Centre to register in our masterpiece. We rushed in the car hoping we didn't left anything and  Thank God we did not. But unfortunately, we were stuck in a traffic jam. LIKE WHY NOWWWWWWW????? We continued to keep calm but as the time grew closer to 2pm, we were having doubts. Was it possible to reach there before 2pm? Was all of this hard work a waste? I didn't know. I wasn't sure why but suddenly I felt that we should pray the Rosary. So we did.

PRAISE TO GOD!!

We reached Sabah Trade Centre at 1:56pm.

When we reached the registration counter, suddenly, the we heard the organisers announcing that we had 2 more minutes to register and also do some finishing touch. We quickly did all those registration stuff and those finishing touch. Before we knew it, 2 minutes were over and all of the participants were requested to stand on the sides as the judges came in with a paper and a pen, ready to judge.

There were, if Im not mistaken, 84 entries.

Our masterpiece.

After 2 hours, the judges had made their decision. Everyone gathered near the stage hoping that their group will be call out.  There were 19 prizes altogether (15 consolation rm300 each, 4th place (special mention) rm1000, 3rd place rm1200, 2nd place rm500 and 1st place rm1700 and a humongous trophy with your group name and team mates' name engrave on it).

And would you have guessed? we received consolation too. Praise the Lord!

So yea, I really enjoyed it xx

(The last picture is rightfully owned by the IPEX, I found it on Facebook. Can you spot me in there?)
